Andrea Mantegna (Italian, 1431-1506)
Bacchanal with a Wine Vat, early 1470, a lifetime or near lifetime impression (Bartsch, 19; Hind, 3; NGA 1973, 73). Monogrammed and dated within the plate. Engraving on laid paper, sheet/image size 11 x 16 3/16 in. (27.8 x 41.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Trimmed into image, laid down, extensive repaired/reassembled tears and replacement of losses (some with retouch),abrasions, toning, staining.
Provenance: Swann Galleries, Sale 2347, Lot 4, April 29, 2014; through to the estate of Robert Wynne, Massachusetts.

The issues are extensive and best understood by viewing the work in person or by examining the accompanying the images. As previously mentioned, the work is laid down. The right edge and much of the area near the upper right corner have been replaced and redrawn. Paper losses in the upper left quadrant have been replace and left blank. Areas of the lower left quadrant look to have been repaired or possibly even piece together from multiple impressions.
The frame measures 18 1/4 x 23 1/4 x 1 1/2 in.
