Description:

Paint-decorated Dower Chest "Maria Elisabed Webern," Berks County, Pennsylvania, late 18th century, inscribed with the recipient's name on the front above two panels with pairs of birds and tulips above two spotted mermaids holding a tulip, further decorated with a horse and two dogs pursuing a stag, the ends with heart corners and stippled panels, all on a molded base, ht. 19 1/4, wd. 49, dp. 22 in.

Provenance: Sold at Pook & Pook, The Pioneer Americana Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Donald A. Shelley, April 20-21, 2007, Lot 394, where it was acquired by the present owner.
